The W. E. B. DuBois Society Junior Research Fellowship is a virtual summer educational and research employment opportunity for low-income high school students of African descent from the Boston area.

​

The program will run for 6 weeks from July 7 to Aug 14.

​

• Students will research the ancient African kingdom of Nubia and a range of other topics important for understanding the black experience in the US.

• They will meet for a one-hour online seminar four times each week with Jacqueline C. Rivers, a Harvard University lecturer and Director of the W. E. B. Du Bois Society.

• In addition, one seminar a week will be offered by Rita E. Freed, the John F. Cogan Jr. and Mary L. Cornille Chair, Art of Ancient Egypt, Nubia of the Museum of Fine Arts. Students will be assigned college-level reading material on each subject and will discuss their research online with an assistant teacher for an hour before each daily seminar.

• They will also write daily to document their research and prepare a two-page paper each week.

• One key reading assignment is the classic, Souls of Black Folk by W. E. B. DuBois. The culminating assignment is an essay on “The Souls of Black Folk Today” for which a PRIZE will be offered!
